Father James McKinlay had died in 1871. Her siblings Marion, John & Thomas who was twin to Janet were also deceased.
Marriage
On 23 February 1880, Mary McKinlay, spinster of Ferry Road Christchurch New Zealand married Henry Paton, Engineer & bachelor residing Dunedin They were married by Rev. Charles Fraser Vicar of St Andrew's Presbyterian at The Manse with John Newlands, Engineer and Elizabeth McKinlay (her sister) as witnesses. Henry was 29 years of age & Mary 24.
Children
Henry and Mary had 6 children - Henry born 12 February 1881 , Edward John born 24 November 1882, Mary born 27 October 1884, Robert James born 18 September 1886, Grace Gibson born 12 February 1889, Elsie born 1895.
Life with Henry took Mary and their family to Oamaru & Dunedin where they finally settled. Mary became a widow in 1920 and continued to live at Maitland Street where she died in 1941 at the age of 85.
Henry, Mary & daughter Elsie are buried in the same plot Southern Cemetery Dunedin New Zealand.
Mary born 25 November 1855 Bothwell Lanark Scotland. Mother Mary McConnell (Cook) - third wife of James McKinlay a coal miner & later Colliery Manager.
The McKinlay family arrived in New Zealand on the ship Soukar. Sailed from London 22nd August 1874 and arrived Wellington 2nd December 1874 with Captain Adams. The Soukar, built in 1864, was purchased by the Shaw Savill Company ten years later and placed on the New Zealand trade to carry passengers and general cargo. She was a large ship of 1304 tons, but, like many other vessels sent out by the company in the 'sixties' and 'seventies' was not very comfortable for passengers. She was one of the slowest of the company's fleet, her best passage occupying 98 days to Dunedin.
